The hike up to McCall Point from Rowena Crest is really spectacular right now with hundreds of acres of Balsamroot and Lupine currently in bloom (along with many other wildflowers). This shot was taken from McCall Point looking west into the Columbia Gorge.

Sunset at Towhead Lake, Red Buttes WildernessI took my two oldest, Elliott and Gwendolyn, backpacking in the nearby Red Buttes Wilderness last week. Over 5 miles in to a remote lake in a rugged wilderness may have been a bit much for a 7 and 9 year old (and especially an out-of-shape 33 year old) but we had an amazing trip and really enjoyed the 3 days that we spent there. One neat thing about our timing is that July is when many hikers that are traveling the Pacific Crest Trail reach the California/Oregon border. Since most of our hike was on the PCT, we were able to chat with several through hikers that had started their journey over 2 months ago. It has always been a dream of mine to someday hike the PCT so it's fun to meet people who are doing it! The kids were pretty blown away once I described what it was all about too :-)If you look closely at the photo you'll see Elliott and Gwendolyn near the large tree on the right hand side.
